Shorts for men: How to look good in summer

Men's shorts can be super controversial – but if you're roasting away in a pair of jeans, there's no reason not to wear them! Shorts are a great way to stay cool in summer and don’t have to make you look like a schoolboy. The first thing to think about is the length that you want. Shorts for men cut just below the knee is a safe bet, but can be a bit boring. For a summery look, your hems should hit a little above the knee – never right on your kneecap, as that will make your legs seem stumpy. A generously rolled cuff will take care of that if you're short, and has the bonus of looking fun and casual.

Styles of shorts that can work for you

If you're not sure what to go for, stick to chino shorts. These look good on just about every man out there, and are a tried and tested summer style in a light colour. Denim shorts for men are another classic. Just make sure they're not too tight – they should sit away from your legs, like a pair of straight cut jeans rather than skinnies. Of course, athletic shorts are also an option. However, you'll generally be better off keeping these for days when you're actually doing some exercise. If you're going to the gym or the track, these are fine – but not if you've got other plans!

Accessorising a pair of shorts for men

Never go too formal in shorts for men. If you try to jazz up your short trousers with a blazer or tie, you run the risk of looking like an overgrown schoolboy. A polo shirt is a nice compromise between ultra-casual and smart; it's a little bit dressier than a tee and can look good tucked into shorts, half-tucked, or left to hang out. If you're going for the tucked-in look, be sure to add a belt to your men’s shorts, ideally in a contrasting colour. Trainers are fine if you're going very casual, but may look a little sloppy. Deck shoes are a good option for your feet, although, in summer, nothing really beats an ultra-relaxed sandal. Leave the socks at home, though! If you're going to be wearing closed shoes, opt for liner-style socks.
