Stay classy this winter with wool coats for men

No matter how cold it gets, wool coats for men are a great way of staying warm without sacrificing style points. Unlike more casual options, like quilted jackets, a wool coat is suitable to wear on your way to work or a formal event; however, it can easily be dressed down for casual days. When you're choosing a coat, there are several styles to go for. The classic overcoat is a timeless option that you'll be able to wear every winter for years to come. A single-breasted overcoat looks more relaxed, while a double-breasted style is smarter. For a more modern take on this look, choose one with buttons covered by a central placket. Prefer a more casual style? Nothing beats a wool duffle coat!

Choosing the right colour

When choosing wool coats for men, many guys automatically reach for black. There's nothing wrong with this – but it can be harsh, and can drain the colour from your face in the weak light of winter. For an alternative that's still smart and work-appropriate, choose deep grey. Navy blue is another option, but it may be less versatile; you won't want to wear a navy coat with a black suit, for example. You can also find patterned coats. Plaid is the most common choice. You can stick to a dark red or blue plaid for an understated look – or, if you enjoy being the centre of attention, choose a bold one in vivid colours that will make you stand out from the crowd!

Men's wool coats: getting the fit right

All wool coats for men should fit a little loosely. Remember, you're going to be wearing layers underneath, so you'll need enough room to fit a thick jumper or a shirt and suit jacket. However, it should still fit you right in the shoulders; the shoulder seam should be right where your shoulder ends. If it's too big, you'll risk looking like a child dressed up! When it comes to length, your coat should hit just above the knee or higher. It's possible to find longer coats, but they can be hard to pull off, and will look awkward and old-fashioned if you're not careful. The sleeves should reach down to the base of your hand, totally covering anything you're wearing underneath.
