What to look for in ski pants

Ski pants are an essential feature of any winter sports enthusiast's wardrobe. You won't be able to wear just anything on the slopes! There are many types of women's ski pants out there; the most common are insulated, with a layer of special material inside to keep you warm. Lightweight shell pants are also available. These contain no insulation but should be windproof and waterproof to protect against the elements. Lined stretch ski trousers are a popular choice for comfort. Made from stretchy fabric, these sit closely against your legs. They don't have much insulation, but they are lined and allow you a wide range of movement.

Getting the right fit in ski trousers

There are three common fits for ski pants. Different skiers have their own preferences, so if you're new to the sport, it can be worth experimenting. This will allow you to find the fit that's best for you. Regular fit pants are the most basic; slim fit is tailored to the waist, hips and thigh. They're good to wear as a base piece, allowing you to layer on top. Some women prefer them for an athletic fit, too. Finally, there are relaxed fit options. These are roomy and baggy, which makes them suitable for wearing as a top layer. If you tend to really feel the cold, it's a good idea to have a pair of these in your arsenal – but some skiers dislike them, as they may restrict movement.

Extra features for comfortable ski gear

Experienced skiers know what to look out for. New to the sport? Be sure to check the waterproof and windproof rating. Materials like Gore-Tex, Hyvent and Event are usually used for waterproofing; these are also breathable, so you'll stay dry and keep the sweat out! Pants will also have a specific breathability rating. If you tend to sweat more, look for a higher number. You may also want to look for thigh zips as an added feature. These give you access to a quick vent, which is ideal for cooling down in a hurry after some intense exercise. For maximum comfort, check out the waist, too. Ski pants with an adjustable waist will allow you to get a perfect fit. Some come with belt loops, an elastic waist, or suspenders.
